Sometimes Less is MORE!

When I sold the Felicity Glycerin Soap company to a large national corporation (read more in our About section), they made me a Vice President of what turned out to be a non-existent department. Part of my job involved traveling the country to train their salespeople on this product. The job included weekly meetings at the home office in Connecticut, followed by traveling to work with sales representatives throughout the country, and returning to the San Francisco Airport late Friday afternoon, near where we lived in Petaluma, CA.

I was married with four children, including two teenage twin boys who were very involved in sports, especially football.

Because the weekly meetings were held early Monday morning, I had to fly to Connecticut every Sunday. After several weeks of meetings and traveling, it became apparent that large companies were not my cup of tea and that one’s family should always come FIRST. This lesson was something I emphasized with those working with me over the last fifty years.

Another important lesson I learned and applied was related to the timely commute from Petaluma to the San Francisco Airport. Within the first month, I decided that if I couldn’t make a living within 50 miles of a business—approximately the distance between Petaluma and the San Francisco Airport—shame on me. Immediately upon purchasing US Audio, INC., I started focusing on providing service only within a fifty-mile radius of our three offices: Oakland, Sacramento, and San Jose. Traveling is both time-consuming and expensive.

Will this tip work for your business? Take five minutes, without distractions, and ask yourself: “Will this work for my business?” If not, why not?

Each week, I will share one of the hundreds of things I have learned over fifty years as a small business owner that can help increase your revenues or reduce your overhead.
